COMPASS – 18TH CENTURY, WITH “COULOMB” ON DIAL: THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL COMPASS MOUNTED IN A 1-3/4″ WOOD CASE WITH SCREW TOP LID. DIAL IS ALL HAND COLORED. COULOMB PRESENTED HIS FIRST TREATISE ON MAGNETISM AT THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCE IN PARIS IN 1773. IN 1777 HE WAS AWARDED PART OF THE  ACADEMY’S GRAND PRIZE FOR A PAPER DISCUSSING THE MAGNETIC COMPASS. IN THE 1780’S HE PUBLISHED A PAPER SIMILAR TO NEWTON’S LAW OF GRAVITY IN THAT CHARGED FORCES (BOTH BEING NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE) ARE REPULSED BUT ARE ATTRACTED IF DIFFERENTLY CHARGE – EXPLAINING THE WORKING OF THE “COMPASS”. HE GRADUATED FROM THE FRENCH ROYAL SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING IN 1762 AND SERVED IN THE ARMY AS A MILITARY ENGINEER. COMPASS IS IN PERFECT WORKING CONDITION, PAINT ON DIAL IS PERFECT, TRACES OF RED PAINT REMAINS ON THE WOOD CASE.
